This beautiful gallery is right in the heart of the Hertfordshire countryside on a working farm. The Copper Beech Art Gallery is housed in a wonderful high oak-beamed barn which has been in constant use in one way or another for two hundred years. It has been a grain store, a farmer's workshop, a furniture workshop and showroom and even an antique shop. It has now been transformed in to a fantastic art gallery and the new Copper Beech vintage tea room serving fabulous homemade cakes and delicious hot and cold lunches. The gallery can be found in the pretty little village of Little Wymondley, just off junction 8 of the A1M, or off the bypass between Hitchin and Stevenage.
The gallery was opened in June 2007. I found this wonderful barn while walking around the village of Little Wymondley photographing the snow for my Christmas cards. I wandered into a farmyard to take pictures of Wymondley Hall and spotted a piece of paper of the barn door saying it was for rent. The barn was in quite a mess inside but I was already in love and with the help of family and friends we did all the necessary work (believe me, there was a lot of it) and opened eight weeks later. The gallery has been a great succcess. I like to offer a warn and friendly atmosphere - in fact, I seem to spend more time chatting than I do working!
The Copper Beech Art Gallery is a place where you can come and see some of Hertfordshire's most talented artists. You can also stay a while in the pretty and cosy vintage tea room. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee served in vintage china tea cups and saucers and gorgeous tea pots accompanied by one of our delicious homemade cakes, homemade scone with jam and clotted cream or one of our lunches. All of this and you are sitting surrounded by gorgeous works of art that are for sale and many different crafts. You can now also sit in the main gallery for your tea.
We are now holding workshops at the gallery which include cake decorating, painting in many styles, mosaicking, lino cutting and printing, hand applique, gilding and many more. If you are interested in taking part in a workshop or maybe a suggestion just give us a ring on 07794 969908 for a chat when we can give you details of workshops.
The gallery is in three sections that all complement each other and are run by me - Fran. I am the photographer and gallery owner. I also make the tea and coffee and - Oh - the homemade cakes and lunches. Makes for a pretty full day. Oh, and by the way, I also make jewellery.
The gallery shows local artists of a very high standard, many of whom are now resident within the gallery. Their work can be seen in our resident artist gallery. Upon a sale of a work the artist receives the full amount of the sale with no commission taken. I am able to run the gallery this way because of the tea room. We also show several visiting artists so there is always new work to see. The comment we hear the most is ‘it looks different very time we come here’.
It is our aim to keep the work in the gallery to a very high standard.
We run an affordable art scheme in which you can reserve a work of art and pay for it over an agreed amount of time.
We are open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm
